Kwame recognizes 50 members of the Parent Policy Council for outstanding service
In his continuing efforts to promote parental engagement in education, last night At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown presented 50 members of the Parent Policy Council with certificates of recognition. The certificates were a tribute to parents for their outstanding citizenship and voluntary participation in the United Planning Organization’s Early Childhood Development Centers’ Head Start programs.
“As a parent with two children in public schools, I’ve been an outspoken advocate of parental participation in the education of our youth,” said Councilmember Brown. “Parent organizations, like the Parent Policy Council, are fundamental to education reform. If we can get parents involved at these early levels, they are more likely to remain involved throughout the child’s educational experience.”
The Parent Policy Council is a volunteer group of parents with children enrolled in UPO’s Head Start Programs who meet regularly for the purpose of participating in the process of making decisions about the nature and operation of Head Start in the District. The organization also serves as link between public, private and local organizations, the Board of Directors and the communities they serve. The organization recruits volunteer services from parents, community residents and organizations, and mobilizes community resources to meet identified needs.
The certificates were presented at a dinner held at Phillip’s Seafood Restaurant in Southwest, DC.

Dear Councilmember Brown:
Thank you so much for taking time out of your very busy schedule to acknowledge the valuable contributions of parent volunteer leaders in our Head Start program. Our staff, especially Lisa Long and Bonnie Wise, are to be commended for their tireless work to mentor and engage parents to take a leadership role in educational and family services for their families. Programs like Head Start have long recognized the significant role of parents. We are honored that you took time out to also recognize the parents. Thank you very, very much!
