What has Kwame done for The We District?
Kwame Brown is an effective legislator who works on behalf of the community and local businesses to improve the quality of life in the District. He is a vocal, visible and active member of the DC Council who continues to fulfill his promises to DC residents by creating and supporting common-sense legislation.
WE Educate. As a graduate of the DC public school system, father of two kids in a DC public elementary school, and husband of a former public school teacher, Kwame understands the challenges parents and teachers face when providing our children with a quality education. He is committed to igniting a dialogue between parents and teachers to find solid solutions inside and outside of the classroom. - The School Modernization Funds Resolution of 2006, which authorized millions of dollars to rebuild Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering Academy, giving new educational opportunities to DC youths.
- Authored the Creative Learning Program Act of 2008
- Authored the Parental Involvement in Children’s Education School Participation Act of 2008
WE Grow. Councilmember Brown is fighting to put District residents back to work and to maximize the impact of the national stimulus package for District residents. He’s leading the effort to create a comprehensive vocational education system in the District to help youth and adults find meaningful employment. - Found $1.1 million for the Get DC Residents Training for Jobs Now Act
- Authored the Small Business Stabilization and Job Creation Strategy Act of 2009
- Authored the Stimulus Accountability Act of 2009
WE Revitalize. One of Kwame’s top priorities is to clean up blighted sections in our neighborhoods and restore declining blocks to functioning areas that can welcome growth and continued progress. By holding absentee landlords accountable and being vigilant on development transactions, Kwame believes that we will continue to improve the face of the District. Here’s what Kwame has done to revitalize our city:
- Authored the Neighborhood Commercial Corridor Tax Relief Strategy Act
- Supported $95 million for Neighborhood Revitalization
WE Safeguard. Kwame is dedicated to providing safe, clean and vibrant neighborhoods in which all the District’s residents can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, raise families and build their communities. He supports initiatives that prepare DC residents for a green collar economy, which will provide a healthier, more robust city landscape. Here’s how Kwame is fighting for a safer, cleaner city:
Supported the creation of the Department of the Environment- Called for the enforcement of green initiatives
- To address violent crime, Councilmember Brown has supported funding that added 350 additional officers to the force, increasing foot patrols and cameras on city streets, as a deterrent to crime in our neighborhoods.
- Created the Comprehensive Homicide Elimination Task Force
- Authored the Victims of Domestic Violence Establishment Fund Act (A16-71), which resulted in:
$6.5 million in the FY 2006 Budget Support Act, tripling the number of shelter beds for domestic abuse victims in the District of Columbia from 48 to 150 beds, including $1 million for My Sister’s Place to complete an important expansion project.
The release of $4.5 million from the Victims Assistance Fund for emergency shelter beds for abused women and children.
WE Prosper. As the Chair of the Committee on Economic Development, Kwame has put forth legislation geared toward increasing local investment, supporting small businesses, increasing job opportunities and bolstering the District’s neighborhoods. His mission has been and continues to be – to make the District a business friendly city:
