We wanted to share the information we received from the District of Columbia Department of Health on the H1N1 virus.

The H1N1 virus, also referred to as “swine flu,” is a new influenza virus discovered in the spring of 2009.  This virus is spreading from person to person in a way that is similar to the way regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.  The District of Columbia Department of Health has been working diligently to reduce the spread of H1N1 among DC residents on the job, at school and at home.

The Mission of the Department of Health is to promote and protect the health, safety and quality of life of residents, visitors and those doing business in the District of Columbia.

The responsibilities of the Department include identifying health risks; educating the public;  preventing and controlling diseases,  injuries and exposure to environmental hazards;  promoting effective community collaborations;  and optimizing equitable access to community resources.
