BROWN EXPRESSES NEED FOR PUBLIC IMPUT TO RESTORE MLK LIBRARY

WASHINGTON - Councilmember At-Large Kwame R. Brown expressed his support of Councilmember Kathy Patterson’s, Chair of the Committee on Education, Libraries and Recreation, recommendation to remove provisions to rebuild the District’s central library, The Martin Luther King Memorial Library from the Fiscal Year 2007 Budget Support Act of 2006.  Councilmember Brown believes that the proposed construction should be considered as stand-alone legislation to allow public input on a facility that will affect their everyday access to vital resources.

“Over the years, The Martin Luther King Library has served as a both a reliable resource and easily accessible facility for all of our communities, especially in neighborhoods where the local libraries are inoperable.  I believe that the community should have the opportunity to express their views on the proposed construction activities to create a win-win situation that improves the quality of the services offered to the community.

I look forward to hearing from the residents of the District of Columbia, librarians and civic groups as to how we enhance a learning facility, which is dedicated to a leader who fought for equal access and opportunity.”
